Catherine Burkitt was born in 1915 in Warracknabeal, Yarriambiack Shire County, VIC Australia to Thomas Arthur Wentworth Burkitt and Anne Elizabeth (Boardman) Burkitt, and had siblings Raymond Burkitt, Harley Burkitt, Donald Burkitt, Constance Pearl Burkitt, and Lesley Victoria Burkitt. Catherine Burkitt died at age 59 years old in 1974 in South Yarra.

In 1915, in the year that Catherine Burkitt was born, the Superior Court in Fulton County Georgia accepted the charter for the establishment of the new Ku Klux Klan, succeeding the Klan that flourished in the South in the late 1800's. This iteration of the Klan adopted white clothing and used many of the code words from the first Klan, adding cross burnings and mass marches in an attempt to intimidate others.

Other songs had previously been used - among them, "My Country, 'Tis of Thee", "God Bless America", and "America the Beautiful".
