Thomas Arthur Wentworth Burkitt of Omeo Australia was born in 1862 in Portland, Glenelg Shire County, VIC to Richard Burkitt and Martha (Charter) Burkitt. He had siblings Harriet Mirah Burkitt, Rebecca Chalner Burkitt, Anna Elizabeth Burkitt, Annie Laura Burkitt, Mary Anne Charter (Burkitt) Lumley, and Eva Florence (Burkitt) Bickford-Sykes. He married Anne Elizabeth (Boardman) Burkitt, and had children Donald Burkitt, Harley Burkitt, Raymond Burkitt, Constance Pearl Burkitt, Catherine Burkitt, and Lesley Victoria Burkitt. Thomas Burkitt died at age 82 years old on July 11, 1945 in Box Hill, Whitehorse City County.

In 1862, in the year that Thomas Arthur Wentworth Burkitt was born, British citizen Anna Leonowens, a widow, accepted a job in Siam (now Thailand) to teach the children and wives of the King of Siam - he had 39 wives and concubines and 82 children. Taking her son with her and sending her daughter to England for schooling, she taught in Siam for 6 years - until the King died.
