He had siblings Harriet Mirah Burkitt, Rebecca Chalner Burkitt, Anna Elizabeth Burkitt, Annie Laura Burkitt, Mary Anne Charter (Burkitt) Lumley, and Eva Florence (Burkitt) Bickford-Sykes. He married Anne Elizabeth (Boardman) Burkitt, and had children Donald Burkitt, Harley Burkitt, Raymond Burkitt, Constance Pearl Burkitt, Catherine Burkitt, and Lesley Victoria Burkitt. Thomas Burkitt died at age 82 years old on July 11, 1945 in Box Hill, Whitehorse City County.

In 1862, in the year that Thomas Arthur Wentworth Burkitt was born, on August 17th, the Dakota War of 1862 began in Minnesota. Four Lakota Sioux - while hunting - killed five settlers near the Minnesota River. That evening, elders of the tribe decided to attack more settlements with the goal of driving out those who had settled the area. By the end of the year, 1000 Lakota had been jailed.

In 1877, Thomas was only 15 years old when on March 2nd, the U.S. presidential election of 1876 was ended with the selection of Rutherford B. Hayes as the winner. Samuel J. Tilden had won the popular vote in November 1876 but 20 votes in the electoral college were in dispute. An informal agreement was made in which Hayes agreed to remove federal troops from South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana, ending Reconstruction in the South. So, on March 4th, Rutherford B. Hayes became the 19th President of the United States.
