  • Introduction

The Hobart Town Mercury. 29th June 1857. BIRTHS. At the Franklin Huon, on the 24th inst., the wife of W. L. Dawson Esq. M.D. R.N. of a daughter. Extract from the Jerilderie Letter written by Ned Kelly to Joe Byrne 1879. About corrupt police who would take horses or cattle and impound them if they wandered off the owners land, knowing the poor farmers had no money to pay the fine to get them back, most of the animals were sold and the police made a nice profit. In 1877 -Stolen Horses found at Howlong. (William Baumgarten spent 7 years in gaol.) "If a poor man happened to leave his horse or bit of a poddy calf outside his paddock, they would be impounded. I have known over 60 head of horses impounded in one day by Whitty and Burns all belonging to poor farmers.. Farrell the policeman stole a horse from George King and had him in Whitty and Farrell's paddocks until he left the force. And all this was the cause of me and my step-father George King taking their horses and selling them to Baumgarten and Kennedy after there brands were altered by me. Baumgarten and Kennedy were strangers to me and I believe honest men. They paid me full value for the horses and could not have known they were stolen. The Queen of England was as guilty as Baumgarten, Kennedy, Williamson and Skillion of what they were convicted for... Edward Kelly. The Queensland Country Life, 15th July 1943. Late Mrs. Baumgarten. MRS. Catherine Ellen Baumgarten, wife of the late Mr. G. L. Baumgarten, died at her residence, Moolan Downs, Meandarra, on June 8, aged 85. She was the elder daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Dawson, of Tasmania. Having spent part of her married life in Victoria, she later came to Queensland with her husband and their nine children.
