She had siblings Anna Maria Mills, James Burgess Mills, Frances Elizabeth Mills, Hugh John Mills, Alexander Henry Mills, Ellen Teresa Mills, Rose Agnes Mills, Eric Byron Mills, Mary Mills, William Mills, Edwin Albert Mills, Ruby Stella Mills, and Allan Victor Mills. Catherine Mills married Thomas Edgar Boyle in 1916, and died at age 88 years old in 1974 in Ararat, Ararat Rural City County.

In 1886, in the year that Catherine Emily Mills was born, on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.

In 1891, Catherine was only 5 years old when James Naismith, at the Springfield Massachusetts YMCA, invented the game of basketball. Originally using two peach baskets and a soccer ball, he created the game to keep his students active during the long, harsh New England winters.
