He married Catherine Ryan Mills in 1879, and had children William Mills, Anna Maria Mills, James Burgess Mills, Frances Elizabeth Mills, Catherine Emily Mills, Hugh John Mills, Alexander Henry Mills, Ellen Teresa Mills, Rose Agnes Mills, Eric Byron Mills, Mary Mills, Allan Victor Mills, Ruby Stella Mills, and Edwin Albert Mills. James Mills died at age 68 years old on March 10, 1923 in Stawell.
