Charles Arthur Smith of Ascot Vale, City of Moonee Valley County, VIC Australia was born on April 18, 1886 in Gundagai, Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council County, NSW to Charles John Smith and Mary Jane (Heron) Smith. He had siblings John William 'Jack" Smith, Charlotte Louisa Smith, Norman Herbert Smith, Isabel Emma Smith, George Henry Smith, Thomas Whitrod Smith, and Eric Tasman Smith. He married Olvie Elizabeth Maud Filmer in 1915, and had children Arthur Eric Smith and Hazel Joyce Smith. Charles Smith died at age 66 years old in 1952 in Ascot Vale, City of Moonee Valley County, VIC.

In 1886, in the year that Charles Arthur Smith was born, on June 13th, the "Great Vancouver Fire" destroyed most of Vancouver, British Columbia. A small brush fire got out of control and spread to the rest of the city. Dozens of people died and it was only after the fire that money was raised for a fire hall. The local Squamish tribe rescued people who had jumped into bodies of water to escape the conflagration.
