He married Cassie Gould (Wills) Storey, and had a child Douglas Charles Kinnear Storey. Charles Storey died at age 55 years old on September 20, 1940 in Wairoa, Hawke's Bay New Zealand.

    The New Zealand Herald. 18th June 1915. EXPLOSION AT OTIRA. TUNNEL WORKER KILLED. TWO OTHERS INJURED. CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. A Telegram from Bealey Flat received this afternoon states that Patrick Toomey, a labourer, was killed, Charles Storey badly injured, and Samuel Armerich slightly injured by an explosion in the Otira Tunnel. At the time of the accident the three men were engaged in charging a hole prior to blasting away rock. The Evening Post. New Zealand. 20th September 1940. WORKMANS DEATH. STRUCK BY LOCOMOTIVE. WAIROA, This Day. Fatal injuries were received by Charles Storey, married, when he was struck by a locomotive at the lower hydro-electric development scheme at Piripaua, Waikaremoana, at 12.45 a.m. today. Storey was in charge of concreting operations in a tunnel........ PIRIPAUA FATALITY. CRUSHED BY LOCOMOTIVE. FINDING AT INQUEST. GISBORNE, this day. Death from shock following extensive injuries which he received when crushed by a locomotive was the verdict returned by the coroner, Mr. V. E. Winter, at Wairoa at the inquest into the death on September 20 of Mr. Charles William Daniel Storey aged 56, a married man and tunnel inspector at the Waikaremoana lower power development scheme at Piripaua. Charles E. K. Alcock, Public Works Department engineer in charge, said that Mr. Storey had lost an eye and his ear and hand in an explosion at Otira

In 1884, in the year that Charles Daniel William Storey was born, on May 1st, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions - a US association - first resolved that "eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labour from and after May 1, 1886, and that we recommend to labour organisations throughout this jurisdiction that they so direct their laws as to conform to this resolution by the time named." Previously, workdays would consist of 10 to 16 hours a day - 6 days a week. It would take years before the 8 hour workday became common practice - and longer before it became a law.
