Charles Frederick Whittlesey's History: 1867 - 1941

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Charles' parents Elisha Whittlesey (1829 - 1902) and Ruby Estella (Winston) Whittlesey (1830 - 1922). He had siblings Elisha, Orville, Horace, Ruby, and Robert. Charles married Edith May (Cruver) Whittlesey (1870 - 1948) and they had children Austin (who followed in his father's footsteps and became an architect), Enid Whittlesey, Harold, and Beatrice. Charles became a well-known figure in architecture in Illinois and California. He was especially known for his use of reinforced concrete in his buildings. An article about his architecture is here: C. F. Whittlesey Taken by Death His daughter, Enid, became the focus of a scandal in the 1920s, She was interested in performance arts and studied music with a teacher, with whom she became involved. Charles discovered the involvement and reportedly threatened physical harm if the teacher didn't make an honest woman of his daughter. They immediately married, but obtained an annulment 2 days later. (Unbeknown to Enid, her lover was already married.) Enid again became a sensation when she was murdered in her home in 1981, at the age of 86. (Read C. F. Whittlesey Taken by Death for the latest on this cold case featured on "Forensic Files".)
