Charles Herbert Edwin Charman 1877 - 1954

Charles Herbert Edwin Charman of Kaniva, VIC Australia was born in 1877 in Portland, Glenelg Shire County to Elizabeth Louise Hollis and George Edwin Charman. He had siblings Ethel Charman Rogers, Robert Henry Charman, Lillian Sophia Charman, Gertrude Rose (Charman) Papley, Mary Ann Charman, Daisy Charman, Arthur George Charman, and Albert Percy Charman. He married Ellen Ann Parsons in 1902, and had children Ella Dorothy Alice Charman, Keith Herbert Cheslett Charman, Nelly Charman, and Elva May Charman. Charles Charman died at age 76 years old on July 12, 1954 in Kaniva.

In 1877, in the year that Charles Herbert Edwin Charman was born, on July 14th, strikes and resulting riots began at the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad. A sympathy strike and rioting began in Pittsburgh and a worker's rebellion began in St. Louis, then spread to other cities. 100 people were killed before the strikes ended when President Rutherford B. Hayes sent federal troops to each of the cities involved.

In 1886, Charles was just 9 years old when on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.
