George Edwin Charman 1852 - 1942

George Edwin Charman of Coleraine, Southern Grampians Shire County, VIC Australia was born on November 24, 1852 in Cheltenham to Mary Ann Rees Charman and Stephen Edwin Charman. He had siblings Elizabeth Lucy Charman, Stephen Herbert Charman, John Arthur Charman, Charles Percy Charman, Robert Arthur Charman, and Francis Maria (Charman) Ward. He married Elizabeth Louise Hollis in 1877, and had children Charles Herbert Edwin Charman, Mary Ann Charman, Ethel Charman Rogers, Robert Henry Charman, Arthur George Charman, Lillian Sophia Charman, Gertrude Rose (Charman) Papley, Daisy Charman, and Albert Percy Charman. George Charman died at age 90 years old on December 21, 1942 in Coleraine.

    The Portland Guardian. Victoria. 4th January 1943. The death occurred of Mr. George Edwin Charman, somewhat suddenly at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ben Rigby, Coleraine. Mr. Charman, who was 90 years of age, had been about his usual routine in the afternoon, strolling around the places, and later sat down and enjoyed a good evening meal, when he was suddenly taken ill. Dr. Tonkin was called in and it was evident that Mr. Charman was suffering from a heart attack. Shortly after the medical practitioner left Mr. Charman passed away. The old gentleman, who had enjoyed good health for the greater part of his life, was the eldest son of the late Stephen and Mary Ann Charman, of Moorabbin, Gippsland, and was born at that place on the 24th November 1852. He married Miss Elizabeth Hollis, of Portland, 67 years ago, and they came to Coleraine to reside nine years later, where Mr. Charman has lived ever since. His wife predeceased him about twenty years ago. There was a large family, the sons and daughters being Charles ( Kaniva ), Flo ( Mrs. J. Taylor, Mt. Gambier, now deceased ), Edith ( Mrs. Ben Rigby, Coleraine), Annie ( dec. ), Ethel ( Mrs. Duncan Rogers, Coleraine ), Robert ( Coleraine ), George ( deceased, who died in the Caulfield hospital from injuries received in the last war ), Lily ( Mrs. Nepean, Brit Brit ), Rose ( Mrs. Papley, Portland ), Daisy ( dec. ), and Albert ( Camperdown.) There are two surviving brothers, Robert and Charles, who both both live at Berwick.
