He registered for the draft on July 1, 1941, in Kearny, Hudson, New Jersey, when he was 23 years old. At the time of registration, he was employed by Western Electric Co. Rieck then enlisted in the military on April 1, 1942, in Newark, New Jersey, and was assigned to Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, USA. He held the rank of Private, Army of the United States.

Rieck's terms of enlistment were for the duration of the war or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law. His military serial number was 32301800.
