  • Introduction

    Charles Richard Trommer was born on June 25, 1923, in Manhattan, New York City, to David Dewey Daniel Trompeter (1897-1977) and Blanche Lazarus (1898-1988). Sadly, Charles' older brother, Martin Trompeter (1920-1922), did not survive past the age of 2. Charles grew up in New York City and graduated from high school before attending Lowell Technological Institute in Lowell, Massachusetts. In 1949, he graduated from the institute, and in the following year, he graduated from the Lowell Textile Institute. While studying, Charles was a member of Tau Epsilon Sigma and the AATCC. In 1948, Charles married Marina Eria Trommer, and they had a daughter named Karen Trommer Casper and a son, Kenneth Robert Trommer (1949-1973). During World War II, Charles served in the Air Corps. After his military service, he moved to Hawaii, where he became a Professor of Chemistry and Horticulture at the University of Hawaii, Hilo.

    He was a high school graduate and went on to attend college. He graduated from the Lowell Technological Institute ( Lowell, Massachusetts, USA) in 1949 and in 1950, graduated from the Lowell Textile Institute. While in school, he was a member of Tau Epsilon Sigma and the AATCC.
  • Military Service

    Charles Trommer enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps on April 4, 1942. He was 22 years old at the time of his enlistment and was registered as a white male. Trommer was 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighed 128 pounds. He had a dark complexion, brown hair, and brown eyes. His next of kin was his mother, Blanche Trommer. As a member of the Army Air Corps, Trommer would have undergone rigorous training to prepare him for his duties in the military. This would have included physical fitness training, weapons training, and aviation-specific training. He was enlisted for the duration of the war, which means he served until the end of World War II in 1945.

Born in New York City, he was a professor of chemistry and horticulture at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, U.S. Air Force World War II veteran, and member of Hilo Concert Society, Viria Society, Orchid Society, Big Island Association of Nurserymen, Water Garden Society, Bamboo Society, Horticulture Society, Palm Society, and Navy League. Visitation from 9-10:30 a.m. Friday, October 13, 2017, at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo; funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Burial to follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No.2. No monetary gifts. Survived by wife, Marina Eria Trommer; daughter, Karen Casper; and two grandchildren, Kenneth and Robert. Source: Dodo Mortuary
