Charles Stanley Gillan Jr was born to Charles Stanley Gillan (1911-1971) and Ethel Mary Meredith (1916- 2006), He had 6 siblings - Margaret, Patricia, Kathleen, Mary, Teresa, and Michael. Charles seems to have lived mainly in San Francisco and Los Angeles CA. His long time companion (30 years) was award winning actor and civil rights campaigner Paul Winfield (1939-2004). They are buried next to each other. Charles was a partner in the design firm TECTA Associates. He was a tv set designer.

In 1951, in the year that Charles S Gillan Jr was born, on June 25th, CBS began broadcasting in color. There were well over 10 million televisions by that time. The first show in color was a musical variety special titled "Premiere". Hardly anyone had a color TV that could see the show.

In 1961, he was merely 10 years old when on April 17th, about 1,000 CIA trained Cuban exiles invaded Cuba with the intention of igniting a rebellion and overthrowing Castro. They were defeated within three days. Although the operation began under Eisenhower, Kennedy approved it and the operation, named the Bay of Pigs for the beach where they landed, was a humiliation for the United States.

In 1976, Charles was 25 years old when The United States celebrated the Bicentennial of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. It was a year long celebration, with the biggest events taking place on July 4th.

In 1983, Charles was 32 years old when on August 30th, the Soviet Union claimed that a South Korean Boeing 747 jetliner (Flight 007), bound for Seoul from New York City, had strayed into Soviet airspace. Saying that they believed it to be a U.S. spy plane, the passenger jet was shot down by a Soviet SU-15 fighter - after it had tracked the airliner for two hours. All 269 passengers (including a U.S. Representative from Georgia) and crew were killed.

In 1997, when he was 46 years old, on June 26th, the first Harry Potter book by J. K. Rowling was released. "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" was an immediate success and spawned not only sequels but also movies, video games, plays, and amusement park attractions. J.K. Rowling, at the time of the first book a poor single mother, has become a multi-billionaire.
