Charles Walker, after marrying Margaret Peters, lived in Orange Co.VA and started his family there. It has been handed down in the family from one generation to another since before the Revolutionary War. Charles was a member of George Washington's surveying crew that crossed the Alleghany Mountains to survey and map out some of the vast bounty of land which King George II had granted Washington fir his previous military service.The surveyor's compass that Charles used has been handed down to his descendents and is now possessed by Vestel Hatcher McKinney of Prospierty, WV. Many of the early Walkers were surveyors and used this Instrument.
After the Revolutionary War, many of the ex-soldiers began to think of migration westward and it appears that Charles Walker along with his nephew, Thomas Walker, John Peters, Christian Peters and their families migrated across the Alleghanies and settled along New River in about 1782. Charles and his family settled on the east side of New River opposite Wolf Creek. John Peters settled a short distance up the river, while Christian Peters and Thomas Walker settled farther down the river. Montgomery County records show that Charles Walker was named as one of the appraisers of the estate of Jacob Peters at a court held May 5,1801. The appraiement was returned at the July 1806 term of the court.
In Jan.1806 Giles County was formed from Montgomery, Tazwell,and Monroe Counties. Charles Walker was a member of the first Grand Jury of Giles County impaneled on May,13,1806. He was also on the second Grand Jury of Giles County that was impaneled on June 10,1806. Giles County records show that Charles Walker a list of a dozen signatures on a petition to assist John Peters in gaining the rights to establish a ferry on New River adjacent to the Peters' dwelling in order to aid public convenience. A plaque on the courthouse grounds at Pearisburg,VA lists Charles Walker as having been a soldier in the Revolutionary War.
