He was married to Eliza (Hemley) Johnson in 1887, and had children Emma May (Johnson) Cahill, William Sealey Johnson, Amy Mary (Johnson) Colquhoun, Frederick Chandler Johnson, Charles Arthur Johnson, Charles William Johnson, John Johnson, Henry James Johnson, Florence Sarah (Johnson) Lewis, Alma Evelyn Eliza Johnson, Vera Hart Hemley Johnson D'Alton, Olive Daisy Johnson, and George Herbert Johnson. Charles Johnson died at age 85 years old in August 1945 in Stawell, Northern Grampians Shire County.

In 1859, in the year that Charles William Johnson was born, on February 27th, US Congressman Daniel Sickles shot and killed Philip Barton Key - a US. District Attorney and son of Francis Scott Key, writer of the national anthem, for having an affair with his wife. Sickles claimed temporary insanity - the first to do so - and was acquitted.
