Henry (Harry) Joseph Grothe, 83, formerly of Queens, NY, and more recently of Mechanicsburg, passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2006 at Claremont (Carlisle), with loving family in attendance.
Son of the late Theodore and Mary (Lydon) Grothe of Quoque, NY, he was born September 7, 1922 in Yorkville, NY.
Harry graduated from West Hampton High School in 1940, and attended the University of Chapel Hill, NC, prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1942. He served as a gunner's mate in World War II. He also served in the Korean Conflict, and did two tours of duty in Vietnam, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander in 1970. He completed his education at the University of New Mexico (Albuquerque) and Fordham University, NYC, NY. Harry had a wealth of historical and political knowledge, and enjoyed debating others with his wit and accuracy of world events. Harry traveled extensively prior to and after his retirement from the Hospital of Bone and Joint Disease, NYC, in 1987. Harry was a voracious reader and enjoyed books, art, entertainment, and traveling abroad.
He is survived by sons, Theodore John (Sharon), Paul Joseph, Henry Joseph; daughters, Susian M., Gina Ellen (Gene) Hunking; grandsons, Shawn, Theodore, Ryan Grothe, Jeremy Hunking; granddaughters, Alexandra Grothe, and Barrie Marie Hunking; and cherished nieces and nephews. Harry was preceded in death by a brother, Carl; sister, Eileen; wife, Helen Carter Grothe; daughter, Marsha Grothe; and his beloved wife, Clare O'Dea Grothe of Queens, NY.
A Catholic Mass will be held at 11 a.m., today, at the Carlisle Army War College. Services will be at the convenience of the family. www.pennlive.com/obits
