    Print Create a hardcopy of this page Font Size: Default font size Larger font size Claudie Gulledge Segars Mrs. Claudie "Dollie Bell" Gulledge Segars, 91, of Eufaula, died Sat., Dec. 7, at Medical Center Barbour in Eufaula. Funeral services were held at 2 pm., Monday, Dec. 9, at the First Assembly of God Church. The Rev. Whit Sasser and the Rev. Chris Toole officiated and burial followed in Fairview Cemetery Addition with Chapman Funeral Home directing. Born Dec. 17, 1921 in Blue Springs, Mrs. Segars was the daughter of the late William David and Florence Wilkerson Gulledge. Mrs. Segars was a long time member of the First Assembly of God Church where she was a member of the Ladies' Sunday School Class. She was well known in her church and around Eufaula for her cooking talent. She retired after 23 years from Cowikee Mills. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and she enjoyed the times spent with her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 74 years, Dewey R. Segars of Eufaula; her daughter, Bobbie (Hubert) Harrison of Eufaula; two grandchildren, Julie (Al) Swartz of Centreville, Va., Lee Harrison of Montgomery; five great grandchildren, Elizabeth Musgrove of Auburn, Riley Mack Harrison of Montgomery, Claire Harrison of Montgomery, John Segars Harrsion of Montgomery, Sarah Grace Swartz of Centreville, Va; her sister, Mary Sue Bynum, of Headland; several nieces and nephews. Mr. Segars was preceded in death by her brothers, Willie Gulledge, Robert Gulledge, Fred Gulledge, George E. "Sim" Gulledge and her sister, Mae Gulledge. Active pallbearers were Lewis Oliver, Alfred Swartz, Lee Harrison, William F. Bynum, Don Mathis and Duane Wortz.

In 1921, in the year that Claudie (Dollie Bell) Gulledge Segars was born, on November 11th, the first burial was held at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. The body of an unknown soldier - selected by Army Sgt. Edward F. Younger who was highly decorated for valor and received the Distinguished Service Cross in "The Great War" - was brought back from France (World War 1) and placed in the newly completed tomb. President Warren G. Harding officiated at the interment ceremonies.

At 1,454 feet (including the roof and antenna), it was the tallest building in the world until the World Trade Center's North Tower was built in 1970. (It is now the 34th tallest.) Opening at the beginning of the Great Depression, most of the offices in the Empire State Building remained unoccupied for years and the observation deck was an equal source of revenue and kept the building profitable.
