  • Introduction

I just know my grandpa was a gymnast of quite some skill. He was an MP in the Army and served in Europe during WW2, which was when he fell in love with my grandmother Maria and her son, Gilbert Peter, who he later adopted. It is my understanding that my grandfather was with IBM just before NASA really got off the ground with their program in Huntsville, AL. CK and Maria lost their son Gilbert in about 1961; I believe he was around 14-years old. It was while living in Huntsville that Mr Brown purchased some land in Prospect, Tn, and built a beautiful lake on Tunnel Hollow Rd. Although it was lonely for me, the property on Tunnel Hollow Road was a great gift from my grandfather for me to grow up there. I remember the train going by. I remember the whippoorwill and the coyote. I remember my pond and the watercress by my granpa’s little, old house being up our dirt road. I remember his trucks and how he was always working on something. I remember watching Dr Who with him on PBS. Even though I was a curious, energetic, and clumsy child, I don’t remember my grandpa ever getting aggravated with me. A man who hung out with Werner Von Braun, my grandpa, would come down from Maryland in the summer and let me hang out with him. I wish that I could have run away with him. He was patient with me, and let me tag along more than my father did back then. My grandpa taught me about what the future held. He was very quick to share with his neighbors and loved to talk. Everyone outside my parents whom I’ve met which knew CK held him in high positive regard. My grandpa used to tell me, “People are rotten, Pete, but don’t let that get you down.”

His Daughter cut his toenails, a short time later, he had gangrene climb up his leg, which killed him. He had been admitted to Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Pulaski, Tn by his estranged daughter who took guardianship and his entire estate… her life’s ambition. It was only after the husband Susie abandoned for 7-years was found dead that she proceeded to have CK Brown’s properties put in her name after finding a distant relative with no knowledge of the situation, Gretchen Quinn, in NM to witness her as the sole remaining heir. Susan was investigated for suspicion of murder by a Giles County Sheriff’s Deputy, but nothing came of it… even after pleading guilty to aggravated assault against her son with a loaded pistol.

Me & my grandpa.

I only wish my parents had treated him kindly, but they wanted the property in Prospect put in their name. It all came to a head in November of 1992, when they confronted my grandpa in the yard. It turned violent, he finally evicted them and changed his Will… which is why it wasn’t until after Ronald Barbour (the only witness to Susan’s actions) was found dead in 2016 that Susie used a Will from 1966 to finally take what she deserved.

I think my life could’ve been better with my grandpa around more. Sometimes, I catch the smell of his pipe and old books. I cherish what I remember and regret being blind to what was happening near the end. If I ever had the chance, I’d tell my grandparents and grossmutter how sorry I am for being an ignorant young man in a hurry to make my own life away from my parents.
