The funeral for Mrs. Coria Ellis Zimmerman, 92, of 1288 Belleville Road, Orangeburg, was held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Cameron with the Rev. Willie N. Waring and Rev. James E. Council officiating. Interment was in Belleville Memorial Garden. Pallbearers were deacons and trustees of the church. Mrs. Zimmerman died Friday Jan. 24 at The Regional Medical Center, Orangeburg, following a brief illness. Born Feb. 11, 1910, in Calhoun County, she was the daughter of the late William Ellis and Mrs. Lizzie Huggins Ellis. At an early age she joined Providence AME Church and served faithfully. On Feb. 12, 1931, she wed the late Harry "Slim" Zimmerman. To this union six children were born. She subsequently joined Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Cameron, where she served faithfully as a member until Jan. 2003. She was a dedicated and loyal member of the Missionary Society, Senior Choir, the Pulpit Aid Club, deaconess Sunday school, YMCA, and mother of the church. She organized and served as the first president of the Pulpit Aid Club. She also held leadership positions in several other church organizations. After the family moved to Orangeburg from Cameron in 1951, she worked for many years with her husband at St. Paul United Methodist Church. She later served as a home childcare provider for more than 20 children who called her "Grandma". Her civic duties included visits to the Senior Citizens' Center and membership in the NAACP. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry aka "Slim", two grandsons, Anthony Zimmerman and Sylvester Zimmerman, and son-in-law, James Elmore. Those who shared the joys of life with her and will always cherish her memories include her children, Dorothy Elmore, L. Zimmerman Keitt, and Evia Z. Thomas of Orangeburg, James (Dorothy) Zimmerman of Manning, Joe (Carol) Zimmerman of Brooklyn, N.Y., and LeRoy (Alice) Zimmerman Newport News, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Evia Whetstone and Sally Ellis, both of Orangeburg; nine grandchildren, Ernestine E. Elmore, Derek Zimmerman, Vincent (Regina) Keitt, Marvin (Irma) Keitt, Lamont Zimmerman and Rodney Zimmerman; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. The wake was from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Simmons Funeral Home, Orangeburg. In lieu of flowers, the family requested that memorials may be made to Mount Carmel Baptist Church and mailed to 1288 Belleville Road, Orangeburg, SC 29115. Simmons Funeral Home of Orangeburg was in charge of arrangements.
