Accused rapist found dead in cell
Hanging death of suspect called suicide
He'll never terrorize a teenager again. Cornelius Cheeseboro, arrested last week for kidnapping, raping, and stabbing a 15-year old girl, was found dead in his jail cell yesterday morning, an apparent suicide.
A guard at the Corran-Fromhold Correctional Facility on State Road discovereed Cheeseboro, 52, hanging by a bedsheet at 6:30 a.m., according to aprison spokesman Bob Eskin. Eskin said Cheeseboro, who was alone in the cell, had tied an end of the sheet to the top frame of the double bunk bed. Although A preliminary investigation ruled out foul play, Eskin said, the probe is continuing on exactly how the death occurred.
Cheeseboro left four suicide notes addressed to members of his family, added Eskin, who said he did not know the notes' contents. "The officer who found him used a cut-down kit to release the inmate and called for medical help," Eskin said "but attempts at resuscitation failed and Cheeseboro was declared dead at 7 a.m."
Court records show that Cheeseboro was imprisoned for rape in 1977. He was given propagation on a charge of simple assault in 1988. At Curran-Fromhold, he was awaiting trial on charges of rape, aggravated assault, simple assault, involuntary deviate sexual assault, kidnapping, stemming from events that began Sunday night in North Philadelphia.
Police said Cheeseboro had grabbed the 15-year-old, who lived in an apartment upstairs from his own on Beulah Place near Fairmount Avenue, as the was coming home that night. He dragged her to the basement, where, she told police, he sexually assaulted her. Then he took her to an empty, trash-strewn first-floor apartment where he bound her hands with duct tape.
About 12:30 a.m., the teen-ager said, he forced her outside and drove to South Philadelphia. Police said Cheseboro first took the girl to a house on 24th Street near Wharton, where he once lived, and sexually assaulted her again. Then he took her to an abandoned church a block away, at 24th and Federal Streets , and according to police, he stabbed her three times. Despite her wounds, the girl was able to escape by jumping out a window and running down the street. Police said Chsseboro caught up with her and stabbed her again before fleeing.
Wounded in the shoulder, arm, neck and chest, the girl frantically knocked on neighbors' doors - it was then about 2:30 a.m. - until someone called police. Cheeseboro was later spotted by police and arrested following a chase through Center City. The victim was treated at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and was discharged Wednesday.
