Cornelius listed in the North Carolina Confederate Army in January of 1862. He was captured at the Battle of New Berne in March of the same year and taken as a POW. He was taken to New York and held at Fort Columbus. He was traded in August of 1862 in a prisoner exchange, but died soon after of a disease that he contracted at Fort Delaware.
