Dale Hubert ("Herb) Sies was my mother's father. He played football for the University of Pittsburgh in 1917, after serving in WWII. He married Dorothea Hansen, also of Davenport, Iowa in the 1920s and they had 3 children - Herb (1925), Sally (1928?), and Susan (1930). Herb was a successful business executive with Standard Oil, after playing football for the Decatur Staley's (later the Chicago Bears), and the Rock Island Independents. My mother had a great deal of respect for her father. He not only took care of his own 3 children, but took his wife's sisters' children in in the late 1930s after Dorothea's sister, Charlotte passed away. The grew the family to 5 - David Petersen, Emmy Petersen, Susie Sies, Sally Sies and Herb Sies. Dale died at 61 of a heart attack. His wife, Dorothea died at 61 years old as well, a few years later - of suspected stomach cancer.
