Dale Hubert Sies of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois United States was born circa January 3, 1895 in Davenport, Scott County, IA, and died at age 61 years old circa October 1956.
Dale Hubert ("Herb) Sies was my mother's father. He played football for the University of Pittsburgh in 1917, after serving in WWII. He married Dorothea Hansen, also of Davenport, Iowa in the 1920s and they had 3 children - Herb (1925), Sally (1928?), and Susan (1930). Herb was a successful business executive with Standard Oil, after playing football for the Decatur Staley's (later the Chicago Bears), and the Rock Island Independents. My mother had a great deal of respect for her father. He not only took care of his own 3 children, but took his wife's sisters' children in in the late 1930s after Dorothea's sister, Charlotte passed away. The grew the family to 5 - David Petersen, Emmy Petersen, Susie Sies, Sally Sies and Herb Sies. Dale died at 61 of a heart attack. His wife, Dorothea died at 61 years old as well, a few years later - of suspected stomach cancer.

My mother used to speak fondly of her Aunt Myrtle - her father's sister. My mother was Susan Jane Sies, daughter of Dale Hubert Sies and Dorothea Hansen. Aunt Myrtle was a successful businesswoman who worked in or near NYC, (as a buyer of womens' clothing?) as I recall my mother saying. Myrtle was engaged once, but then the engagement was broken. My mother inherited her engagement ring - and it remains in my possession - now a vintage treasure. Myrtle was known for being kind and generous and hard-working. ;)

Myrtle C Sies of Davenport, Scott County, Iowa was born on July 24, 1884 in Johnson County, and died at age 86 years old on March 21, 1971 in Davenport, Scott County. Myrtle Sies was buried at Oxford Cemetery in Johnson County.
