    Daniel C Cheek was born in Houston, TX to Jane E. Kuhleman and Robert Edward Condon. His name before adoption by James R. Cheek III was Horace Daniel Condon. Robert was killed in WWII, leaving a daughter, Katherine Diane Condon behind as well as his wife Jane and son Dan. He and his mother and sister lived with his grand parents, Walter Albert Kuhleman, Sr. and Katherine Jefferson Kuhleman at 2122 Arbor St., Houston, Texas for the next 7 years until Jane married Jim, who adopted Dan and Diane. The children names were not originally changed to Cheek on their birth certificates (more on this later). Jim and Jane then had 2 daughters Christine Lee Cheek and Paulette Cheek. In 1960 or 1961 their mother Jane died from an aneurism of the brain. Jim Cheek remarried a woman named Peggy Heubner and they had One daughter named Pamela Cheek.

In 1942, in the year that Daniel C. Cheek was born, on November 28th at 10:15p, a nightclub in Boston, the Cocoanut Grove, caught fire. The origins of the fire are unknown but it killed 492 people - the deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history. Hundreds more were injured. The disaster was so shocking that it replaced World War II in the headlines and lead to reforms in safety standards and codes.
