5 Die in Two Train Wrecks
MAUD (AP) - Two teen-agers were killed Friday when they tried to outrace a train with their car, authorities said. The deadly collision, which happened shortly after 8 a.m. at a crossing on County Road 1116 in Bowie County, was the second in as many days involving a vehicle and a train. Three Magnolia teen-agers were killed Thursday night in a Montgomery County accident, said Texas Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Laureen Chernow.
In both incidents, the teens weren't wearing seatbelts and were thrown from the vehicles, she said. In Friday's collision, Ricky Rogers was driving a car that "tried to beat the train across the railroad crossing" Ms. Chernow said. Rogers, 17, was pronounced dead at the scene, and Michael Sanders, 17, died at St. Michael's Hospital, she said.
Shortly after 8 pm. Thursday, a pickup truck driven by Darren Victor Kessler was hit in Magnolia when it failed to stop at a railroad crossing, Ms. Chernow said. Kessler, 19, and passengers Pamela Renee Wolff, 16, and Michael Wayne Mathis, 17, died at the scene, she said.
