I've "rescued" an old photograph of David B. DUNKEL of Shamokin, PA which was taken on 12 Apr 1899 at the M. Thomas Studio in Shamokin, PA. In addition to his name, some has also written "Clay's Father" on the front of the photograph. I would guess that David was in his 40's at the time the photograph was taken. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding David and his family:

David B. DUNKEL or DUNKLE was b. 1857 or 1858 in Ohio to parents Samson John DUNKLE (b. 1827) and Elizabeth STEWART (b. 1825). David was one of six children born to this couple including, David B.; Lizzie; Harriet; Mary Levina; John H.; and Richard G. DUNKLE, all born between 1857 and 1866. David married Rebecca J. DUNKLE (b. 1862) and together the couple had four children including, Alta or Atta E.; Boyd S.; Roy S.; and Clay H. DUNKLE, all born between 1886 and 1891 in Pennsylvania.

In 1857, in the year that David B. Dunkel was born, on December 16th, a 7.0 earthquake struck the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies - Southern Italy. It had a maximum Mercalli intensity of 11 (Extreme) and killed about 10,000 people..

In 1969, in August, a previously planned small concert turned into a (free) more than 400,000 strong gathering of attendees and bands at Max Yasgur's farm in upstate New York - now called Woodstock. Just some of the 32 acts: Richie Havens, Joe Cocker, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Joan Baez, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe, Santana, The Band, and Sly and the Family Stone.

In 1973, in October, Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned - President Nixon nominated Gerald Ford for Vice President. Nixon's tax returns came under investigation. Nixon offered the recently discovered Oval Office tapes be heard by one person and summarized - his offer was rejected by the Special Prosecutor. Nixon ordered the Attorney General, then the assistant Attorney General, to fire the Special Prosecutor. Both refused and were fired. The Solicitor General became the acting Attorney General and fired the Special Prosecutor (the Saturday Night Massacre). Nixon releases some of the tapes, under extreme pressure because of the firings.

In 1988, on December 21st, Pan Am Flight 103 exploded over Lockerbie Scotland. The explosion killed all 259 people on board and another 11 on the ground. The flight had left Heathrow Airport in London less than an hour before, on its way to New York. After an exhaustive (and long) investigation it came to be believed that two individuals from Libya had planted the bomb.

In 1993, on January 20th, William J. Clinton became the 42nd President of the United States. He beat incumbent George H.W. Bush who was seeking his second term. Clinton won 43.01% of the popular vote to Bush's 37.45%. An independent candidate, Ross Perot, won 18.91% - the most votes for an independent candidate since Teddy Roosevelt's run for President in 1912.
