Brother & Sister: D. L. Sheeks & Mary Isis Sheeks
This picture postcard, dated 25 July 1917, was one of several Mary Isis Sheeks, Halbert's daughter, sent to John E. Carr at the Indiana State School for the Deaf. Mary had one of the most tragic lives imaginable. Her fourteen year old sister Carmie May died when Mary was only six. Her first born son, named after her husband, Raleigh V. Young, lived only five days in 1924. Her 28 year old brother, Cecil F., died of a ruptured appendix in 1925, leaving behind his wife, Naomi Murl Chastain, and six month old son, Robert E. I figure Mary married abt 1922 or 1923, but her husband died in 1933. Finally, her two sons, Hugh Franklin, 30, and Robert Leland, 28, were both killed when the plane they were piloting, crashed on her parents's farm on 20 June 1955. I guess no one could have suffered more except her parents, who also lost two babies in infancy, and her husband's parents. Mary later married a Mr. Graham and moved to Indianapolis.

D. L. Sheeks & His Wife, Opal Ona Simpson
D. L. & Opal married 26 Oct 1912 in Lawrenceport, Lawrence Co, Indiana. They had three children: Roy, Ruth and Mary Edwina. Ruth's husband recalled that when they "were going together they went to many a dance where D. L. played the fiddle and Opal the guitar," ...and that D. L. "was the best fiddler I ever heard." Ruth also would "second on" at times. D. L. tried various other occupations, the Ford Plant in Indianapolis, street car motorman, appliance salesman and repairman for his cousin Louisa (Colglazier) Baker, but ended up spending most of his life farming and playing the fiddle. Both died in 1963, he in May and she in November, and both are buried at the Buddha Cemetery, Guth Twp, Lawrence County, Indiana.

The Halbert James Sheeks & Ella (Fields) Family
From left to right: Cecil Fields Sheeks, who died 18 April 1925 of a ruptured appendix; Laura N. Sheeks; Mary Isis Sheeks; Halbert James Sheeks, who died 11 June 1936; David Lawrence Sheeks, better known as D. L., who died 20 May 1963; and Ella (Fields) Sheeks, who died 9 Sep 1941. Carmie May Sheeks (12 Oct 1891-7 July 1906) is not in the picture, which leads me to think it was taken after her death. Other children born to Halbert & Ellie were: Henry Clay Sheeks (25 June 1885-5 Aug 1886; Luther Sheeks (9 May 1894-6 July 1894); and Jessie Sheeks (26 May 1895-24 Jan 1896).
