He married Ellen Henderson Lee in 1902, and had children Edmund James Littlejohn, Isabella Jean Littlejohn, and Marion Joyce Littlejohn. David Littlejohn died at age 74 years old on January 21, 1957 in SA.

In 1882, in the year that David Samuel Littlejohn was born, on August 3rd, President Chester Arthur signed the 1882 Immigration Act. "Criminals, the insane, or any person unable to take care of him or herself" were not allowed in the U.S. according to the Act. It also imposed a "head tax" on non-citizens entering the U.S.

In 1903, David was 21 years old when the silent film, The Great Train Robbery opened. Although it was filmed in Milltown, New Jersey, it was a Western. Twelve minutes long, the film used a lot of innovative techniques - some scenes were hand colored and composite editing, on-location shooting, and frequent camera movement were used. Its budget was $150 (about $4000 currently) and was the most popular film until 1915 when Birth of a Nation was released.
