  • Early Life & Education

    Diane graduated from Frank W. Cox High School in Virginia Beach, VA, in June of 1970. Following graduation, she attended Princess Anne Business College, S Lynnhaven Pkwy, Va. Beach, VA, and graduated with honors in an executive secretarial class, a one-year course that included shorthand, typing, letter-writing, grammar and punctuation, accounting, and a charm course. After working as a clerk typist/stenographer for the City of Virginia Beach Department of Planning, she decided to return to school and take a court reporting course by entering VA Stenotype Institute in Norfolk, VA, about 1972 in the first day school program. Becoming disgusted with the school's owners, she and several others left and completed their studies at a stenotype school housed in Princess Anne Business College, completing the course during day and night classes. The school was co-owned and run full-time by Katherine Nelson, who had formerly taken stenotype. Frank G. Taylor, RPR, was a co-owner along with Katherine. Diane did not actually graduate per se but passed her national certification through the National Shorthand Reporters Association, and the school sent her a diploma in the mail since she had started working in Nov 1974 for Associated Court Reporters in Norfolk, VA, which was owned by Doris O. "Pinky" Derieux.

  • Religious Beliefs

    Spiritual but not religious per se. She attended Indian River Baptist Church when very small and went to their Vacation Bible School. Then she attended Centerville Baptist Church on Centerville Tnpk S in Chesapeake with her maternal grandmother. She attended Sunday school when her maternal aunt, Geneva (Higgerson) Mince taught Sunday school and her first cousin, Nancy Ann Mince, Geneva's daughter, played the piano for the children to sing in Sunday school class. Never particularly liking to attend, she stopped when her grandmother stopped attending due to age and health; however, Diane and Fred were married there.

  • Military Service

    She never served in the military.

  • Professional Career

    Diane took shorthand and typing classes in high school and business college, and afterwards increased her speed and endurance by learning to use the stenotype machine. For 42 years, Diane worked as a court reporter starting as an independent contractor in 1974 and free-lancing for 21 years, then becoming a U.S. Court Reporter in federal court for 10 years; and completing her career as the Court Record Manager at the Center for Legal and Court Technology housed in the world's most technological courtroom at the College of William and Mary Law School in Williamsburg, VA, from where Diane retired in 2014.

  • Personal Life & Family

    Since court reporting was a labor-intensive type of work with constant deadlines, it did not leave much time for anything else. Always having an interest in genealogy, she worked her free-lance reporting assignments so she could visit court clerk's offices, libraries, and museums afterwards, time permitting, and do research. She was a member of the VA Genealogical Society quite early and attended conferences where she was considered special due to her young age with an interest in genealogy. She joined the National Genealogical Society in 1981 and has been a continuous member ever since. She was also a member of the National Shorthand Reporters Association, which changed names to the National Court Reporters Association during her membership, and she also belonged to the VA Court Reporters Association beginning in 1973 and has maintained that membership as well. Sometime in the mid 1980s, she was a charter member of the Norfolk Genealogical Society, which no longer exists.
