  • Introduction

Because his father was in the military and his mother was anxious and uncertain as to when he might be sent overseas, possibly that led to the result of his breached birth and caused his death in less than a week after his birth. His gravestone in the Campbell family section in Campbell, N.Y. just lists the year of his birth and death, nothing at all as to the month and day when he was born and died.

In 1919, when he was only 1 year old, in June, the Treaty of Versailles - officially ending World War I - was signed. The European Allies demanded "compensation by Germany for all damage done to the civilian population of the Allies and their property by the aggression of Germany by land, by sea and from the air.” The requirement of compensation is seen by most as the reason for the collapse of the German economy and gave rise to the rule of Hitler.
