Drivers face charges of manslaughter
Two truck drivers were yesterday committed for trial on charges of the manslaughter of six people, who died in a car crash near Ballarat. Terence O'Toole, 17, of Sebastopol, and Robin Ward, drivers of two vehicles involved in a head-on collision with the car in March, were sent for trail at Bllarat, on August 1, after Mr. D.N. Stanistreet, SM, inquired into the deaths of Donald Francis Blurton, 32, farmer, of Streatham; his wife, Vivienne Fay, 30; their children, Craig Andrew, 2, and Julie Anne, 7: Phillip Bruce McIver, 21, student, of Westmere, and Claire Ellen David, 20, student, of Leongatha.

The court heard that six people were killed instantly in the crash, about 12 miles west of Ballarat on the Gleneig Highway. Gerald Williams, 30, of Ross Creek, told the coroner he watched two trucks in his rear vision mirror. He said he heard a loud noise and noticed that one of the trucks and a car, which had just passed him, had collided.

Six from one car killed
. . . in head-on crash at Ballarat

Four adults and two children were killed instantly las night in a head-on smash west of Ballarat. Wreckage was strewn along 200 yards of the Glenelg Highway a mile from Smythesdale. The six were in a late model station wagon. The wagon and an empty four-ton truck collided head on about 6:10 p.m.

The dead were named early today as: Donald Francis Blurton, 32, farmer, of Streatham; his wife, Vivien Faye, 30; his daughter, Julie-Anne, 7, and son Craig Andrew, 2. The fifth victim was Phillip Bruce McIvor, 21, of Westmere, near Streatham, Monash University student. Also killed was a girl aged about 19 believed to be Phillip McIvor's girlfriend. Her name has not yet been released.

The truck driver, Terence Michael O'Toole, 28, of South Ballarat was not badly hurt. He got face cuts and suspected factures. Police and ambulancemen took more than an hour to cut the bodies out of the car.

Chief Superintendent F. Kelly of the Central Highland Police district said last nigh he was "amazed and appalled" that an accident could claim the lives of six people on a good straight section of road. The station wagon was "flattened like a pancake", an ambulance officer said. Police said the truck was moving up a fairly steep hill when the car came over the rise towards Hamilton.

The Blurtons were identified by Donald Blurton's brother, Alan, and his wife, who then left Ballarat to notify Mr. and Mrs. Blurton Senior on holidays at Torquay.

Sergeant Charles Welsh, of Ballarat Police, said the Blurtons had spent the day shopping at Ballarat and were returning home when the tragedy occurred. "We believe the other two people were getting a ride home with them." He said Donald Blurton was believed to have been driving the station wagon.

Sergeant Welsh said the truck driver, Terence O'Toole, was retuning from Warrnambool after delivering a load of pellets.

Eight people have died on the roads around Ballarat in the past four days. A Ballarat tow truck operator, Mr. Bill Shepherd, said the accident was the worst he had seen. "There was almost nothing left of the car. The roof was pushed right back past the rear seat."
