Drivers face charges of manslaughter
Two truck drivers were yesterday committed for trial on charges of the manslaughter of six people, who died in a car crash near Ballarat. Terence O'Toole, 17, of Sebastopol, and Robin Ward, drivers of two vehicles involved in a head-on collision with the car in March, were sent for trail at Bllarat, on August 1, after Mr. D.N. Stanistreet, SM, inquired into the deaths of Donald Francis Blurton, 32, farmer, of Streatham; his wife, Vivienne Fay, 30; their children, Craig Andrew, 2, and Julie Anne, 7: Phillip Bruce McIver, 21, student, of Westmere, and Claire Ellen David, 20, student, of Leongatha.
The court heard that six people were killed instantly in the crash, about 12 miles west of Ballarat on the Gleneig Highway. Gerald Williams, 30, of Ross Creek, told the coroner he watched two trucks in his rear vision mirror. He said he heard a loud noise and noticed that one of the trucks and a car, which had just passed him, had collided.
