Doris Appleyard of Yarram, Wellington Shire County, VIC Australia was born on September 7, 1915 in Yarram to Walter George Appleyard and Florence Louise (Appleyard) Appleyard. She had siblings Amy Katherine Appleyard, Alma Edna Appleyard, Alfred James Appleyard, Elsie Elizabeth Appleyard, John Madden Appleyard, Constance "Connie" Monica Appleyard, Molly Mavis Appleyard, and Walter Ernest Appleyard. Doris Appleyard married Henry Thomas Johnston in 1935, and died at age 94 years old in 2009.

In 1915, in the year that Doris "Dorrie" Appleyard was born, in April, the Ottoman Empire rounded up, arrested, and deported 235 to 270 Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Turkey. As their actions continued through the next several years, an estimated 600,000 to 1 million Armenians were killed by Turkish soldiers.

Al Jolson starred as a cantor's son who instead of following in his father's footsteps as expected, becomes a singer of popular songs. Banished by his father, they reconcile on his father's deathbed. It was a tear-jerker and audiences went wild - especially when they heard the songs. Thus begun the demise of silent films and the rise of "talkies".
