Dorothe Friederike Kensing was born on March 18, 1826 in Bad Münder am Deister, NDS Germany to Johann Friedrich Heinrich Kensing and Hanne Justine Wilhelmine Sophia Louisa (Borchers) Kensing, and had siblings Friedrich Christop Heinrich Kensing, Heinrich Friedrich Ludwig Kensing, Heinrich Friedrich Karl Kensing, and Christine Justine Louise Charlotte (Kensing) Braeutigam. Dorothe Kensing died at age 20 years old in 1846 at Indianola in Calhoun County, Texas United States.

In 1826, in the year that Dorothe Friederike Kensing was born, on March 10th, João VI, King of Portugal and the former Emperor of Brazil, died after a short illness. Six days earlier, the King had become ill after eating at the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon. An investigative autopsy in the late 1990's discovered that he had been killed by arsenic poisoning - having enough arsenic in his body to kill two people.
