    My Gramma Dorothy Erickson was a CNA at Andrew Kaul Memorial Hospital, St Mary's Elk County, PA in Labor and Delivery. She worked the night shift at the hospital as my Grampa was disabled due to a leg injury when he was a kid in a sledding accident. He had worked in Johnsonburg at the Paper Mill but in the late 1950's into the 1960's he couldn't work anymore due to his leg and eventually he became bedridden and couldn't leave the upstairs of their home.

    Gramma had a heart condition eventually she lived with my Aunt Clarice in Raliegh, NC she eventually got weaker on a Sunday afternoon my Aunt Clarice her daughter who was a nurse was assisting her to use the bathroom and my Gramma passed away in her arms in her home.

In 1903, in the year that Dorothy Vandella Mcquarrie Erickson was born, the United States Department of Commerce and Labor was created by President Theodore Roosevelt to control the excesses of big business. Renamed the Department of Commerce 10 years later, many departments concerned with workers were transferred to the Department of Labor at that time. Another spin-off, the Bureau of Corporations, became the Federal Trade Commission.

In 1937, at the age of 34 years old, Dorothy was alive when on May 6th, the German zeppelin the Hindenburg caught fire and blew up. The Hindenburg was a passenger ship traveling to Frankfurt Germany. It tried to dock in New Jersey, one of the stops, and something went wrong - it blew up. Thirty-six people were killed out of the 97 on board - 13 passengers, 22 crewmen, and one ground worker. The reasons for the explosion are still disputed.
