    Dudley Darvin King was born in San Bernardino, California son of John Henry Cidon & Catherine Louise (Hamilton) King. Dud was the youngest child of ninteen children. At age sixteen Dudley was in an automobile accident which broke his neck and injured his spinal cord leaveing him paralyzed. He was a quadriplegic and spent the rest of his life in a wheel chair. He was able to accomplish many things, that the doctors thought he never could do. He could drive with hand controls. Dudley was living with his sister and brother-in-law in Ava, MO. and right after his 40th Birthday, he was killed in an accident. He was coming home late at night when his van ran off the road and landed in a pond on a farm. He was found the next morning by the farmer. Dudley was loved by many and greatly missed.

In 1940, in the year that Dudley Darvin King was born, on November 5th, President Franklin Roosevelt was elected to a third term, defeating Wendell Willkie of Indiana (a corporate lawyer). Roosevelt running for a third term was controversial. But the U.S. was emerging from the Great Recession and he promised that he would not involve the country in any foreign war (which of course changed when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor). Roosevelt defeated Willkie in the popular vote by 54.7 to 44.8% and in the Electoral College 449 to 82.
