Earnest Edward Phegley 1928 - 1992

Earnest Phegley of Linton, Greene County, Indiana United States was born on December 22, 1928 in Oaktown, Knox County to Alpha A Phegley and Opal Pauline (Robbins) Phegley and Alpha Phegley. He had siblings Harold Eugene Phegley Sr, Harold Eugene Phegley, William H Phegley, James Robbins, Jimmy Phegley, Ronald Phegley, John Phegley, Junior Phegley, Ruth (Phegley) Horn, and Helen (Phegley) Anderson. He married Mary C Sherrill Phegley, and had children Earnest Edward Phegley Jr., Debbie S Phegley Bunner, and Ralph L Phegley. Earnest Phegley died at age 63 years old on November 21, 1992 at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, and was buried on November 24, 1992 at Sheperds Cemetary in Carlisle, Sullivan County.

Powers ejected and survived but was captured. The U.S. claimed that the U-2 was a "weather plane" but Powers was convicted in the Soviet Union of espionage. He was released in 1962 after 1 year, 9 months and 10 days in prison.
