The Age, Melbourne. 20th October 1942. OLDEST RESIDENT IN AUSTRALIA. Mr. Edward Bennett, the oldest man in the Commonwealth, died at 2:20 a.m. in his 109th year. He was known throughout Gippsland as the grand old man of Briagolong. He was born in Tandragee, County Armagh, Ireland, on July 13, 1834, and landed in Melbourne from the sailing ship London in 1854, after four months sailing. The late Mr. Bennett described Melbourne as a scattered village when he arrived here, and Bourke street between Elizabeth street post office and Buckley and Nunn's was an open paddock. As a lad he carted water from a pump below Princes bridge and wood from Dampier Creek, now Burwood. As a judge of horse flesh he was buyer for Campbell and Sons at Kirk's Bazaar for many years. He was in the gold rush to New Zealand, and joined up with volunteers against the Maoris in 1886. He purchased the Turf Hotel at Sale, sold out, engaged in the hop growing industry at Briagalong in 1896, and finally selected land there. After retiring and living in comfort, he enjoyed life and lived on memories to the end. He listened for planes and watched them rising higher over the hills from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Boyce, who was untiring in her care. His presentation to the Duke of Gloucester as a centenarian was not the least among his memories. He said to the last that life had treated him well, and he had watched proudly his descendants growing up. Of seven sons and four daughters, four sons and two daughters are living. There are 63 grandchildren and 79 great-grandchildren. He had no serious illness during a long life, and did not know the taste of medicine.
