Edward J. Wencek, age 74, of Newtown, died Wednesday at home after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Marion Daniel Wencek. Mr. Wencek attended Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, NJ, before enlisting in the Army during World War II. He received the Purple Heart and was discharged following the war. He returned to complete his education at St. John's University and St. Peter's College in NY.
In his early career, he was a radio announcer and founded and managed a talent agency before beginning employment with American Electric Power. He later worked for and retired from the American Standard Corporation, where he was employed in Stock Services, and was the Corporate Historian. He was active in the Newtown Republican Party, had been an officer of the American Records Management Association and for many years was active as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader. He delighted in his portrayal of Father Christmas each year.
Mr. Wencek is survived by two sons and their wives, of Danbury, CT, and of South Kingston, RI; a sister, and her husband of Queens, NY; four grandchildren; and four nieces and nephews. The funeral was conducted by the Bethel Funeral Home, 215 Greenwood Ave., Bethel, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Mary's Church, Bethel. Burial was at St. Mary's Cemetery, Bethel.
