Edward Michael Quinlivan of Moonee Ponds, City of Moonee Valley County, VIC Australia was born on March 24, 1872 in Coghills Creek, City of Ballarat County to Thomas Quinlivan and Ellen Catherine Cavanagh. He had siblings Jane Marcella Quinlivan, Daniel Quinlivan, Mary Ellen (Quinlivan) Forbes, Catherine Quinlivan, Joseph Patrick Quinlivan, Daniel George Quinlivan, Andrew George Quinlivan, Thomas Quinlivan, and Ann "Annie" Frances Quinlivan. He married Catherine 'Kate' McKenzie Quinlivan in 1901, and had children Dorothy Frances Quinlivan, Kathleen Gertrude Quinlivan, Edward Quinlivan, and Edward George Quinlivan. Edward Quinlivan died at age 68 years old on July 7, 1940 in Moonee Ponds, City of Moonee Valley County.

In 1872, in the year that Edward Michael Quinlivan was born, on May 10th, Victoria Woodhull became the first woman to be nominated for President of the United States. She was too young to qualify for President - a year under the minimum age, 35 - and women couldn't vote but she was nominated by the Equal Rights Party, which supported equal rights and suffrage for women. She didn't appear on the official ballot.

In 1906, Edward was 34 years old when Finland became the first European country to give women the vote and to allow them to run for political office. (Women in Australia and New Zealand already had that right but couldn't run for office.) Although Finland belonged to the Russian Empire, there was great unrest and the Tsar wanted to broker a quick peace. As a part of the brokered peace, women got the vote.
