Edward Tragardh was born in 1886 to Charles Washington Tragardh and Alice Maude Mary (Johnson) Traghardh, and had siblings Norman Lafayette Tragardh, Alice Olive (Tragardh) Akerley, Charles Rupert Tragardh, Lars Sven Tragardh, and Erik John Tragardh. He married Pearly May Tragadh ( Eldridge, and had a child Tilden Charles Tragardh. Edward Tragardh died at age 74 years old on July 24, 1961 in Parkville, VIC Australia.

In 1886, in the year that Edward Washington Tragardh was born, on January 5th, Scottish novelist Robert Louis Stevenson's book the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was published. Immediately popular, the paperback book was sold for $1 in the U.S. - almost $25 today. Stevenson's stepson said that he wrote the first draft in under 3 days.

In 1905, Edward was 19 years old when the Niagara Falls conference was held in Fort Erie, Ontario. Led by W.E.B. Du Bois and William Monroe Trotter, a group of African-American men met in opposition to racial segregation and disenfranchisement. Booker T. Washington had been calling for policies of accommodation and conciliation and these two men, along with the others who attended the conference, felt that this was accomplishing nothing. The group was the precursor to the NAACP.
