Elizabeth Ann Askew (Marshall) Causer was born on November 15, 1906 in England United Kingdom to William Askew Marshall and Jane (Potts) Marshall, and had siblings Elizabeth Ann Marshall, Mary Cutter Marshall, Anne Nancy Marshall, William Askew Marshall, John Marshall, Thomas Henry Marshall, Joseph Cutter Marshall, Jenny Marshall, and Jenny Marshall. She married Wilfred Causer on August 23, 1930 in Darlington, Darlington County, and they were married until Wilfred's death on April 8, 1974 in Middleton Saint George. She had children Raymond Wilfred Causer, Derek Causer, Brian Causer, William Noel Causer, Heather (Causer) Spicer, David Causer, and Maurice Causer. Elizabeth Causer died at age 79 years old on June 17, 1986 in Middleton Saint George.

In 1906, in the year that Elizabeth Ann Askew (Marshall) Causer was born, author Upton Sinclair exposed the public-health threat of the meat-packing industry in his book The Jungle. While his intent was to show the lives of exploited lives of immigrants in Chicago and other industrialized cities, most people were horrified by how the meat that ended up on their tables was handled. There was such an outcry that legislation was passed to regulate meat packing. Sinclair said " "I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach."
