  • Introduction

Elizabeth Guyton Roberts was my adoptive mother. She, myself, my adopted sister, Cindy and adopted brother, John, were all born in Horry County, SC (Conway). Elizabeth came from a family of 13 children. She was next to the youngest, Elwood (a sister) was the baby. My mother said they were very poor and made their existence by farming the land, whether their own or someone elses land, I am unsure of. She told me her father died when she was 9 yrs old, and her mother,Isadora, married her off to a WWl vet, much older, last name Prescott. She said he worked at the local lumbermill and died after falling into a vat of acid. She later married Frank A. Donnelly in Charleston, SC, and in 1956 adopted Cynthia Marie (who was actually a child of Velma Joyner, an older sister to my mother). I was born to Margaret Fowler Jordan Hardwick in March 1960, and sometime later that year, given to Elizabeth. The true circumstances are still not fully clear to me, but that's not important here. Somewhere around 1963, she left Frank Donnelly and married Robert (Bob) L. Roberts, who was then in the Air Force and 13 years her junior. The marriage took place in Charleston, SC in 1964. He later switched to the Army as a career, and we subsequently lived at Army posts in NC, KS, GA, TX and Germany. My mother was never really a 'well' person, neither physically nor emotionally. She died in 2005, Bob died in 2008, and Cindy died in 2009. I currently reside in San Antonio, TX, with my husband, 2 little dogs, grown children and grandchildren.
