  • Introduction

The Kilmore Free Press. Victoria. 6th August 1925. - Painful Double Tragedy. When she was informed that her son William, aged 15 years, had been killed by an electric train Mrs. Ellen Clara Butchart collapsed and died. She had been unwell for some time and had been receiving medical attention. A double funeral left the home of her husband, Mr. William George Butchart, of Ethel street, Thornbury. Falling between an electric train and the platform at the Barker railway station Butchart was dragged about 20 feet and crushed to death. He was a student at Xavier College, and according to the Kew police, ran on to the platform with a companion. Both boys attempted to board a train which was leaving the station. Butchart's companion jumped into the carriage, but Butchart was struck by the open door and fell between the train and the platform. The train was stopped and Butchart released, when a doctor found that he was dead, and the body was taken to the morgue by Constable Stone. Mrs. Butchart was a sister of our townsman, Mr. P. F. Egan, with whom much sympathy is felt in connection with the pathetic tragedy related.
