Ellen Marjorie Moncrieff Waddell was born to John D. Waddell (1852 - 1894) and Sarah Louise Preston (1859 - 1920). Her mother was born in Australia. She had six siblings: Elizabeth, Elsie Jean "Jane", Archibald, Martha, Thomas, and Alfred Waddell; and four half-siblings: Lewis, Horatio, Frederick and Olive Bennett. Note: Ellen's family reports that she was born in 1890. Her divorce decree reports her date of birth as July 4, 1892, the date of birth that is on this memorial.

Ellen M. Waddell married Clarence R. Edwards (1894 - 1946) on October 13, 1913 in Victoria, Australia. They had one daughter, Clarice Sheila Edward (born December 22, 1916). They divorce in April of 1923. Ellen had one son, Oliver Waddell (1910 - 1998) from a previous relationship.
