Isabel and Eloise Oglesbee
**PHOTOGRAPHS HAVE BEEN RETURNED TO FAMILY!!
I've "rescued" two old photographs of Isabel and Eloise OGLESBEE which were taken at the Sohreick's Studio in Dayton, OH. The photographs are framed together in a decorative tin frame with an inscription on the back "To Lucy, love and best wishes" and the girls names. I would guess that the girls are infant to about 6 years old in the photographs. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding the two girls:

Isabel Robinson OGLESBEE was b. 4 Oct 1902 in Ohio to parents Edward Elmer OGLESBEE (b. 4 Aug 1870 in Greene Co. OH-d. 2 Sept 1947 in Los Angeles Co., CA) and Gertrude Luree ROBINSON (b. 13 Aug 1873 in Indiana-d. 3 Jan 1959 in Los Angeles Co., CA). Isabel married Paul R. KEMP (b. abt 1898 in Ohio) in 1928 and she died in Santa Barbara Co. CA on 19 Oct 1990.

Eloise V. OGLESBEE was b. 29 Dec 1909 in Dayton, OH to the same parents and married Hugh R. GROFF (b. 5 Nov 1907 in Piedmont, SD) on 11 Jul 1935 in Los Angeles, CA. Eloise d. 24 Nov 1976 in Santa Barbara, CA and is buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, CA.

1909 - 1976 World Events

Refresh this page to see various historical events that occurred during Eloise's lifetime.

In 1909, in the year that Eloise Oglesbee was born, explorer Robert Peary, a Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy, claimed to have been the first to have reached the geographic North Pole. His claim has been disputed for over a century - some say that he ended up 60 miles from the North Pole. Peary was the only navigator on his team and he didn't submit his records for public review.

In 1934, when she was 25 years old, on July 22nd, gangster John Dillinger was killed in Chicago. His gang had robbed banks and police stations, among other charges, and he was being hunted by J. Edgar Hoover, head of the FBI - although many in the public saw him as a "Robin Hood". A madam from a brothel in which he was hiding became an informer for the FBI and, after a shootout with FBI agents, Dillinger was shot and died.

In 1940, Eloise was 31 years old when on September 16th, the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940, was enacted - the first peacetime draft in U.S. history. Men between 21 and 36 were required to register with their draft boards. When World War II began, men between 18 and 45 were subject to service and men up to 65 were required to register.

In 1962, by the time she was 53 years old, on October 1st, African-American James H. Meredith, escorted by federal marshals, registered at the University of Mississippi - becoming the first African-American student admitted to the segregated college. He had been inspired by President Kennedy's inaugural address to apply for admission.

In 1976, in the year of Eloise Oglesbee's passing, on August 4th, a mysterious illness struck an American Legion convention in Philadelphia. Within a week, 25 people had died and 130 people had been hospitalized. It was the first known instance of what came to be called "Legionnaires Disease."
