She had siblings James Alfred Briggs, Frederick William Briggs, Mary Jane Briggs, Arthur Albert Briggs, Lucy Annie Briggs, and Fanny Athelea Briggs. Emily Briggs died at age 80 years old in 1939 in Windsor.

In 1859, in the year that Emily Maria Briggs was born, on October 16th, abolitionist John Brown led a raid on Harpers Ferry Armory in Harper's Ferry, Virginia, in an attempt to start a slave rebellion. He wanted to "liberate" the guns in the armory and arm slaves. Brown was captured and hanged on December 2nd.
