He had siblings Edith Alice Kearney, Florence Marie Gertrude Kearney, Cecil John Kearney, and Kathleen Olive Frances Kearney. He married Ethel Charlotte Cholerton Kearney in 1912, and had children John Edward Kearney, Ernest Arthur Kearney, and Dorothea Ethylwyn Kearney. Ernest Kearney died at age 77 years old in 1960.
