Ernest Edward Hearn was born on June 30, 1899 in Illabarook, VIC Australia to Robert Eli Hearn and Esther Jane (Jones) Hearn, and had siblings Robert Eli Hearn Jnr., Mary Jane Hearn, Benjamin Thomas Hearn, Adelaide Helena (Hearn) Smith, Edith Sophia (Hearn) Clarke, George Hearn, Henry Hearn, Violet Letisha (Hearn) Dunn, Sydney Hearn, Marjorie May Hearn, Bertha Ann Hearn, and Christina Dora (Hearn) McKay. He married Mary Janet Hearn ( Rizzoli, and had children Heather Mary Hearn and Margaret May Watson ( Hearn. Ernest Hearn died at age 30 years old on February 12, 1930 in Yallourn.

In 1899, in the year that Ernest Edward Hearn was born, the meaning of Chinese "oracle bones" was rediscovered. Farmers in China had been turning up the bones in their fields for generations but most often they were ground up and sold as medicine. The chancellor of the Imperial Academy and a friend noticed, before they ground the bones, that they had writing. The bones had been used around the second millennium BC for divination.

In 1907, when he was only 8 years old, the showman Florenz Ziegfeld introduced his Ziegfeld Follies. Ziegfeld was inspired by the Folies Bergère of Paris and the show was a step up from the then current vaudeville shows. The top entertainers of the time played in the Follies but the stars were the Ziegfeld girls - beautiful chorus girls in elaborate costumes. For almost a quarter of a century, the Ziegfeld follies were the toast of Broadway.
