  • Obituary

Obituary from the Waterloo Daily Courier pub. 23 Oct 1947: RETIRED PASTOR OF CEDAR FALLS DIES AT AGE 93 Rev. Ernest Nolte Began Service as Circuit Rider in Pioneer Times Retiring from active service more than two decades ago after having at that time completed 51 years as minister of the gospel, Rev. Ernest Nolte, who died late Wednesday night in his 94th year at his home at 1008 Clay street, was a remarkable character whose services as preacher began as a circuit rider in pioneer days and continued far into the motorized era. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Evangelical-United Brethren church. Rev. J. I. LaFavre, pastor officiating, assisted by Dr. H J. Faust and Rev. L W. Bock. His ministerial labors were in the Evangelical church. He is survived by three sons and three daughters. His wife, who was Miss Carrie Gurney, of Streator, Ill., when he married her June 19, 1879, died Jan. 11, 1934, after the couple had enjoyed a married life of more than a half-century. The children include Miss Clara Nolte, who lived with her father; Rev. J. R. Nolte, Waterloo; Mrs. Carl W. Miller (Viola), Cedar Falls; Dr. Karl F. Nolte, Hibbing, Minn.; Elmer Nolte, Knoxville, Ia.; Mrs. Willard L. Treweek (Florence), Mineral Point, Wis. There are also three grandchildren. Born in Germany The son of William and Sophia Fisher [sic] Nolte, Mr. Nolte was born in the village of Stroit, Brunswick [sic], Germany, Sept. 12, 1854. He was brought to America by his parents when he was about eight years old. Five of the copule's eight children came with them. They crossed the Atlantic in a sailing vessel, the trip taking seven weeks. There was much hardship and discomfort attached to that long journey. The family of seven, whose diet was largely salt pork and fish, was allowed but a quart of water daily. Rev. Mr. Nolte had spent the last few weeks in bed, but prior to that he took daily walks and his erect figure and benign face were well known to many here. His mind was clear and his intellect keen up to the last moment of his life. Licensed at Ackley His parents were poor and the whole family had to work hard on the farm near Cottage Grove, Wis., a short distance from Madison. After more than 10 years of struggle to get an education and training for the ministry, young Nolte received a license as a preacher on probation at the Iowa Evangelical conference annual meeting at Ackley. That was in the spring of 1874, and he began his career as the pastor of a country church in Plymouth county, Iowa. Over the next half-century, he held pastorates at Omaha, Neb.; Atlantic, Des Moines, Creston, Corning, Burlington, Dubuque, Muscatine, Waverly, Van Horne, Dysart, Faireld [sic] (Fairfield), Cedar Falls, Dunkerton, Pleasant Valley and Coster. He also spent four terms (16 years) as district superintendent of the Iowa conference, and five times he represented his conference as delegate to the general conference, the last time in Cleveland, O. Medal From Railroad During his 16 years as district superintendent, he traveled much on the railway and he made many friends among the officials of the Illinois Central railroad. Several years ago the president of this railroad, along with several other officials, called at his home and presented him with a gold medal, which he wore on his watch chain. Engraved on one side is: "Rev. Ernest Nolte, friend of the Illinois Central for 66 years" and on the other side the insignia of the Illinois Central railroad. On his last birthday anniversary, Sept. 12, 1947, he received a personal letter of congratulations from the president of the I. C. system. Although he retired from the work of an active minister of the conference, Rev. Mr. Nolte was not idle during the many years since then. He helped many younger ministers whenever opportunities were given, and spent much time in writing articles for Evangelical church papers. For more than 70 years he regularly attended the annual meetings of the Iowa conference.

Nolte Family Reunion - Hampton, IA 1922
Nolte Family Reunion - Hampton, IA 1922
The Nolte Family Reunions were popular and well attended in the early 1920's. Only about four people in this photograph have been positively identified, however. It is entirely possible that the father of a rather well-known actor could be in this photo. If he attended the reunion, he would have been age 18. However, he is not one of the few people who have been positively identified. Two people who are known, however, are the elderly couple just to the right of the middle of the group. The husband has the pointed, white beard and he is staring off to the right. His wife is to his right (we see her on the left) and is in the light dress. This couple is Rev. Ernest Ludwig Henry Nolte and his wife, Carrie (Gurney) Nolte. He was born 12 Sep 1854 in Stroit, Braunschweig, Germany -- his given name in his native language would have been Ernst. He died about 1947. His wife was born in 1858 in Freeport, Stephenson Co., IL and died in 1934.
Date & Place: at Harriman Park (Probably) in Hampton, Franklin County, Iowa USA
